Operation: leg and ankle

So Sunday 11th August I am awaken by around 9 people around my hospital bed (i had earplugs and my eye mask to help me get some sleep the night before). They ask me how I am feeling...my answer: "well my leg is broken, I had 3 failed ankle manipulations last night, I'm in pain and I want more sleep". A hop to the toilet (i will never say anything bad about a disabled toilet again!), back into bed then it's time to get ready for theatre. I am given a bowl with some soapy water to have a wash with

Confirmed, and a stay in hospital

Now that it was confirmed that it wasn't just a fracture but a dislocation too, I was immediately rushed from the Minor Injuries to A&E (where MI said I should have been in the first place, I replied saying I didn't think it needed that!)  My leg was put in a backslab to help make it stable for the journey, luckily there was a blanket in the boot from the spare tyre that could help keep the CTR clean from the wet plaster!

On arrival, we handed over a sealed envelope from Minor Injuries (as tempting as it was I didn't want to open it in the car on the way over) and was greeted by the 'ever so non-helpful' receptionist.  After quite a short wait in the waiting room, we get to see the on-call orthoapedic doctor.

After being sat in a cubicle with a decent supply of gas and air and his attempt to get my dislocated ankle back in place (all I can remember was him telling me to point my toes like a ballerina), we went to xray:

It had moved very little :-(

More gas and air was needed....a LOT more!! I can remember the doctor being a lot more rough this time, and it hurt LOTS more! After a while it was, again, back to xray:

Still no improvement, so a different doctor came, I can't remember much about this one apart from being told to take deeper, longer breaths of gas and air....which I wish the first doctor told me to because this really helped!  All I can remember from this one was that I didn't have anyone's hand to hold as my boyfriend had to wait outside.  As before, another trip to xray. No change

I had been in a chair since around 1600 and it was now 2200.....I was hungry, in pain, and starting to feel very unwell...I had seen people come in and out with less serious injuries that mine, and wondered when it would be my turn to go home.  I wasn't going home, I was in too much pain and had to ask for a bed and some pain relief, as I had already been given paracetamol the only thing they could give me was gas and air

Gas and air was just what I needed, instant pain relief, when I needed it

But after 3 failed manipulations I got the bad news: I needed an operation to get my ankle back in place, but because it had been so long since the original injury if this isn't sucessful, along with the op for the fracture, they may need to amputate!  I didn't want to believe it!

I was taken up to a ward, and had to wait for my operation the day after. They had TV's there, but no remotes :-( Luckily it was the same make as the TV I had at home, so just over an hour later I had my own private TV that I could change channels!

My mate at work asked one day 'fancy coming to see a band I know, they're really good'....thought to myself why not!  Turns out it was certainly a night to remember

This is me and my friend, while the night was young :-)

As I don't live too far from the City Centre, and it was a nice warm night and my boyfriend was with me, it was decided that we would walk.  As it turns out, this wasn't one of his best ideas. I 'fell'...I say it like that as I didn't really trip or slip, I just hit the ground, went straight down.

This is what he thought was just a sprain:

And this was the next day, after not much sleep, and miraculously getting my 'Hello Kitty' pyjamas on!

I could hop around, so didn't think I had done anything major to it, but I thought a trip to Minor Injuries might be worthwhile, they may be able to bandage it up so I could walk on it

Little did I know:

Oh yes, that is a spiral fracture to the Fibula and a very disocated ankle!
